Delphi, lying on the slopes of Mount Parnassos, is the second most revered site in Greece, known throughout the ancient Greek world, and beyond, as the sanctuary of the God Apollo. Blending harmoniously into the superb landscape, Delphi is steeped in sacred mythology.
In ancient times, Delphi was regarded as the centre of the world because, according to Greek mythology, Zeus released two eagles from the ends of the universe in order to find what was described as the ‘navel’ of the world. It was in Delphi that the two eagles met.
Close to the archaeological site are a number of cafe-bars and restaurants plus shops selling folk art and replicas of finds from the ancient site.
